Hardcover binding is the highest quality binding available. Printed cover is laminated and glued on heavy board to make a smooth outside cover. The book block is then attached to the inside of the board making a very durable book cover.
Covers are made separately and may consist of rigid boards that can be covered with printed sheet, cloth, leather or textured paper so that the covering material surrounds the outside edges of the board. The covers always extend beyond the edges of the text page. End sheets are glued and attached on the inside covers to the text signatures (sections). In some book designs these can also be printed. Case binding is more expensive than softcover, but has greater longevity and higher perceived value.

Hardcover books often are made with dust jackets. Dust jacket is most commonly made from 170gsm MC woodfree paper and laminated. It serves as protection for hardcover books when cloth or non laminated paper is put on binding board.
